The more wings an angel is pictured with, the more power he has. Pictured as heavenly beings or Cherubs each of the twelve zodiacal sign received two wings. The "overseers" of those beings; Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael each had three beings, or six wings beneath them, which is why they were pictured as Seraphs with six wings.

Angels mostly are reported to have two wings, or no wings at all; they mostly appear as shiny "men". An angel having two wings has two "wingless" angels under his command, which is why angels often appear in three's. Seraphs have up to six wings, which means they have six angels (or hosts) under their command, or; under their wings as the metaphor goes. Sammael, who is said to be Satan is said to have twelve wings, which means he would have two (former) Seraphs, each leading six hosts under his command. Metatron has "thirty-six pairs of wings" means that he thrones between six Seraphs on the right and six on the left of him, each having six wings. This means that the powers of Light and the powers of Darkness are combined in him. This may also account for the seventy (actually 72) original names of Metatron which include angels of Light as well as angels of Darkness.
