The unicorn (Chinese; K’i-Lin) is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could only be approached by a pure of heart virgin or captured by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison. The white horse with a single horn on its forehead is associated with innocence, purity, peace, prosperity and holiness and was said to appear at the birth of very important people. Though sometimes associated with a Rhinoceros, the mythical animal appears in the pre historic Indian Harrapa period in the company of a true to nature Rhino. The unicorn mentioned seven times in the King James Bible is a translation error of the Hebrew word re'em for wild ox, or mountain ox into the Greek Monoceros, but fuelled the idea that the unicorn was a real animal. As a mythical animal the Unicorn sometimes represents the Afterlife, understood as Death by most people and seen as a reason to flee from. The Unicorn however stands for everything that is good. Though sometimes erroneously associated with an erect penis, its horn actually represents the Lance of Righteousness, a ray of Light from the Spirit of God.
