Tiamat with her husband Absu (Akkadian; Apzu) were the two "halves" of the creational waters; the upper and lower waters mentioned in the Bible, that were separated from each other by God.

And God (Elohim) said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." And God made the firmament and separated the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. Gen 1;6

The Akkadians knew of separated waters in different densities. Before that they were known to the Sumerians as Nammu, the goddess of the Primal Water.

This separating of the waters refers to the Sumerian god of Wisdom, Enki, "defeating" the Absu and taking over this realm in the middle of the deep waving sea (not a marshland); and doing so, separating the waters of creation in lighter and darker, higher and lower, sweet and bitter waters. In the middle of Creation, some time after the Big Bang, due to centrifugal forces, the center was turned into a realm of Light; Paradise; the Higher Waters. This realm of Light was surrounded by a "Wall" ; the Cosmos with all its Galaxies, stars and planets. Outside the wall are the lower waters.

Apsu and Tiamat are what the spiritual Adam and Eve are based upon. (Or even Adam and Lillith.)

Adam (Atum) the higher consciousness, with Eve, (Hawa, Chayah); mother of all who live on his side. Eve was taken from the rib or actually from the side of Adam to produce a suitable help for Adam. Together Adam/Abzu and Eve/Tiamat formed two great powers or Eons in the heavens. Since we are created in the image of God, Adam is our higher Self and Eve is the life, the soul with which he is connected.

The upper and lower waters were also known as the two leviathans in Jewish mysticism.

Later in Assyro/Babylonian mythology in order to raise him to the importance of the highest God, the separating of the waters is described to Marduk, who was said to have defeated Tiamat and divided her into two halves, thus forming heaven and earth.
