The Earth's axis always points to the same region in what we thus call the North. So, viewed from the Northern hemisphere, these stars never disappear behind the horizon. This is why sailors have used the Polar star as a navigational object for ages. It's always visible and always points north, which is obvious and remarkable at the same time.
