The word for dove, used in the Old testament, is Jonah, which is also the name of the prophet who stayed in a fish for three days,

And the Lord made ready a great fish to take Jonah into its mouth; and Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. Jon 1;17

which explains why Jesus compared himself with Jonah. (Sign of Jonah.)

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the stomach of the great fish, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Mt 12:40

In Christian tradition the descending dove stands for the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus.

This is not so different from the Jewish tradition (Zohar) where the dove stands for the Shechinah, the presence of God and also the Torah, the Holy book of the Jews, or better yet, the wisdom it contains, which ads up to the same thing.

It is therefore written: "And the voice of the turtledove (Hebrew; tor) is heard in our land" (Shir Hashirim 2:12) in the masculine, instead of Torah, which is the feminine.  Tor is a name of a dove. Why was Torah likened to a dove? Because its voice is sweet like that of a dove. This voice will resound when Mashiach (Messiah) will come at Judgment Day; namely BEFORE redemption, when Mashiach will execute judgement and war against the nations which enslave Israel.  Yet it is not yet the time to reveal the Torah.  It is therefore called “Tor” in the masculine…    14. Vayechi : 13. "Whom Hashem has given me" Verse 92.

As soon as King Messiah reads in the Torah scroll, the two eagles will rise from each side and the dove will lower herself to descend. King Messiah will step down with the crown on his head to the last level (Malchut) and two eagles will fly above his head. The dove will return with the crown in her mouth, and the two eagles will welcome her.  40. Shlach Lecha : 17. The crown of Messiah Verse 149.

.

It is also similar to a dove, the secret of Malchut, called “Dove”in Shir Hashirim, to which two wings are attached.  28. Tzav : 5. Burnt offering, sin offering and guilt offering Verse 44.

who correspond to the two wings of the dove, who is the Shechinah.  49. Ki Tetze : 8. One's fear of sin precedes one's wisdom Verse 56.

Malchut is connected to Melchisedek, who walked the Earth in the old days.

Melchizedek is Malchut and the King of wholeness.  34. Emor : 13. "Whoever he be of your seed in their generations that has any blemish" Verse 45.

That is Melchizedek, the name of Malchut.  43. Balak : 10. "Hashem, You are my Elohim; I will exalt You" Verse 157.

So what we have here is the dove; the Shechinah descending on Malchut - Melchisedek; Jesus, clearly pointing him out as the priestly messiah.   When Jesus returns, he will return as the royal Messiah.  This will be at the exact same time of the coming of the Hindu "Nishalank" or "Kalki Autar", the Sikh "Mahdi Mir" and the Moslem "Imam Mahdi" or "promised messiah" because they all are the same one.

"There is no Mahdi but the Messiah." Mohammed

"There is no Mahdi but 'Issa ibn Maryam." Mohammed

(There is no Mahdi but Jesus, son of Mary.)
