The Mayas had 17 types of essentially agricultural calendars, all corresponding with each other and enabling them to predict rains, storms and hurricanes. The time keeping system of the Mayans was a combination of several cycles that meshed together, marking the movement of the Sun, Moon and Venus. They used years of 360 days, 260 days and a Haab year that had 365 days. The most famous of calendars became known as the Mayan Long Count calendar, the Tzolkin, based on the cycles of the Pleiades, encompassing 26,000 years. The Tzolkin is known as the Long Count because it deals with large cycles of time, identifying each day by counting the number of days passed since Creation. This is reflected in the Tzolkin by 260 days, pairing the numbers from one through 13 with a sequence of 20 day-names, using a modified vigesimal tally. Some claim that; "Thirteen is the vibrational force that is found in all things, the source of all knowledge in the galaxy, and is representative of movement. The twenty is derived from the product of number four, representing Measure, and five, the number of the primary matrix structure consisting of the center and four cardinal points." Or maybe, in stead of counting in tens like we do using our ten fingers, they counted in twenties adding their toes and divided their year in 20 day months.

This 26,000-year cycle is slated to end on December 21, 2012. We are now in the last k’atun of the cycle, stage 13, AHAU. Over the last 2000 years the Mayan astronomers, sitting on top of their astronomical observatories on Yucatan peninsula, somehow figured out that the December solstice sun was heading for an alignment with the galactic centre. Which only takes place once in 26000 years. This would happen 4 times in one world age. Each 26000 year period consists of 5 cycles of 5200 years a cycle, distinguished from each other by climatic events. Each cycle is divided into 13 periods of 400 years. In the first cycle the earth was created with the animals, in the second cycle people were like mud (red), but these lacked conscience and resilience. In the third cycle people were like wood (brown), but they couldn’t walk, couldn't make any progress. In the fourth cycle amber (colored) people were created but couldn’t survive either. In the fifth and last cycle people were created from the "masa", the dough of corn (pale) and blood (had a soul) that knew and worshipped the gods; the forces of nature and the powers at play in the universe. They had god consciousness. It is a bit like the Sumerian god Enki creating mankind not before some previous attempts had gone wrong, or in fact, like the predecessors of man that were no match for homo sapiens.
So, according to the Mayas, every 5200 years a climate change is supposed to take place. According to Paleoclimatologist Lonnie Thompson of Ohio State University, 5200 years ago such a climate change indeed took place. Quelccaya in the Peruvian Andes is the home of the worlds greatest tropical icecap. At the bottom of this icecap swamp plants are captured in the ice, flash frozen overnight as the result of a dramatic climate change 5200 years ago. A date that corresponds to August 11, 3114 BCE in the Gregorian calendar. The same phenomenon can also be observed on mount Kilimanjaro in Kenia. If this is indeed the result of a flash-frost capturing everything in ice overnight, this could point to a dramatic climate change caused by a polar shift approximately at the same time the last Maya cycle was ended. Bear in mind though that we're talking about tropical swamp plants on top of a mountain. Volcanic activity seems more plausible here, resulting nevertheless in dramatic climate changes. The Mayan calendar known as the Dresden codex was intended to target the future alignment ending on our Dec 21 2012 with black clouds, lightening and floods. At this moment we are at the brink of a new world-age starting in 2012. * A lot of people are expecting a dramatic event ending the world as we know it, but this is not supported by historical facts. There may be climate changing events that shouldn't be taken lighthearted, but it would be very coincidental if they took place on that very date. As said, the calendars are agricultural in design, which means that they would indicate when it was a good time to sow or to harvest or, around which time to expect certain environmental changes.
Our last millennium ended on December 31 2000
That didn't happen.
Despite the fact that it would be more logical for Jesus to come back 2000 years from the day he died, they thought Jesus would come back 2000 years from the day he was born. As if he would have thought thát was the bad day. * vThe calendar is more like an indication of when certain things will be set in motion. It's set up like a wheel that turns around like the hands of a clock. Each time a cycle is completed, a new cycle begins. * That changes are coming is evident, It's inherent to living on Earth, but I wouldn't stay home for it on 21-12-2012.
Of course you can never be sure.
No one knows exactly when "it" is going to happen.

Jesus did give us some clues about the end days, and there is a whole awful lot that still has to happen before it is so far.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled: for these things must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines and earthquakes in divers places. But all these things are the beginning of travail. Then shall they deliver you up unto tribulation, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all the nations for my name's sake. And then shall many stumble, and shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray. And because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold. But he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come. When therefore ye see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let him that readeth understand), then let them that are in Judaea flee unto the mountains: let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out things that are in his house: and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloak. Located in the Cordillera Oriental section of the Andes mountains of Peru, the ice cap is at an average altitude of 5,470 meters (18,600 ft) and spans an area of 44 square kilometers (17 mi²). As with the majority of the Earth's glaciers, the Quelccaya Ice cap has retreated significantly since it was first studied. Since 1978 the icecap has lost approximately 20% of its area, and the rate of retreat is presently increasing. Comparing pictures taken in 1963 and 1978, an annual retreat rate of 4.7 meters (15.4 ft) was estimated. In the first few years of the 21st century, the annual retreat was measured to be as much as 205 meters (672 ft), more than 40 times as fast. The major outlet glacier from the Quelccaya Ice Cap, the Qori Kalis Glacier, has also retreated significantly since 1963. Anthropologists visit the temples, read the steles and inscriptions and make up stories about the Mayan people, but they don't read the signs correctly. It is their own fantasy. ... Foreign people write about the prophecies in name of the Mayas. They say that the world will perish on the twenty-first of December 2010. The Mayan elders are upset about this. The world will not perish. The world will be transformed. It is the Mayas who have these calendars and the knowledge how to interpret them correctly. The others do not. Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other. There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases. All sorts of frightening things will be seen in the sky. Before all this happens, you will be arrested and punished. You will be tried in your meeting places and put in jail. Because of me you will be placed on trial before kings and governors. But this will be your chance to tell about your faith. Don't worry about what you will say to defend yourselves. I will give you the wisdom to know what to say. None of your enemies will be able to oppose you or to say that you are wrong. You will be betrayed by your own parents, brothers, family, and friends. Some of you will even be killed. Because of me, you will be hated by everyone. But don't worry! You will be saved by being faithful to me. When you see Jerusalem surrounded by soldiers, you will know that it will soon be destroyed. If you are living in Judea at that time, run to the mountains. If you are in the city, leave it. And if you are out in the country, don't go back into the city. This time of punishment is what is written about in the Scriptures. It will be an awful time for women who are expecting babies or nursing young children! Everywhere in the land people will suffer horribly and be punished. Some of them will be killed by swords. Others will be carried off to foreign countries. Jerusalem will be overrun by foreign nations until their time comes to an end. Strange things will happen to the sun, moon, and stars. The nations on earth will be afraid of the roaring sea and tides, and they won't know what to do. People will be so frightened that they will faint because of what is happening to the world. Every power in the sky will be shaken. Then the Son of Man will be seen, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When all of this starts happening, stand up straight and be brave. You will soon be set free. Luke 21 And Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that it may not happen in winter. For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand. "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake." Mark 13;5 This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD. In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. Eze 38 He (the king of the north) will send troops to pollute the temple and the fortress, and he will stop the daily sacrifices. Then he will set up that " Horrible Thing" that causes destruction. Dan 11;31 CEV A northern nation will then send troops desecrating the temple and citadel ending the daily sacrifices and a horror of destruction will arise. Then the " Horrible Thing" that causes destruction will be put there. And it will stay there until the time God has decided to destroy this one who destroys. Dan 9;27 CEV Then there will arise a horror of destruction that stays there until the time that God has set to undo this destroyer.
