The new Testament gives no clear description of Jesus. It is sometimes claimed that he was a dark skinned man with a short beard and brushy hair like most Jewish man in his days. It (to my knowledge) nowhere says in the Bible that he had a olive-brown (reddish brown) skin, but he probably had that typical Mediterranean tan. It is also claimed that, since Paul in one of his letters said that it was a disgrace for men to wear long hair, Jesus must have had short hair, because he would never have written that if Jesus had long hair. Jesus however was called a nazarite like Samson and Samuel before him. Jesus had himself baptized by John the Baptist who also was a nazarite. The Romans called Jesus a nazarene, which may be called the Christian version of a nazarite. "We have found this man to be a troublemaker, stirring up riots among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect. Acts 24;5. They even wrote above his head while hanging on the cross; I.N.R.I. Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus the nazirite, king of the Jews. In fact all the first Christians were called nazarenes, or nazirites. The term was used in a derogatory sense. A nazirite or nazarite (in Hebrew: נזיר, nazir (consecrated" or separated) refers to a Jew who took the ascetic vow described in Numbers 6;1-21. This vow required the man or woman to abstain from alcohol and even the grapes from which the wine was made, he would avoid corpses and graves and refrain from cutting the hair on one’s head. This vow was made for the rest of his life or for a certain period of it. Members of the nazarite sect were known for their long hair. Samson is well known for his long hair that gave him great strength until Delilah decided to cut it of. Long hair was indeed seen as a disgrace, but a nazirite was willing to carry that disgrace for the Lord. It meant that he was free from pride and self glorification; it meant that he got rid of his lower self. Paul knew all this, so he would have had no problem with declaring that it was a disgrace to wear long hair. He himself in fact cut of his hair in relation to a vow he had made (Acts 18;18). Jesus might have had an olive-brown skin, but he very likely had long hair and his forefathers David and Jacob, the brother of Esau in view, it may very well have been reddish for they too had reddish hair.
