GOG AND MAGOG

Magog is mentioned in the Bible in combination with Gog;

Japheth's descendants had their own languages, tribes, and land. They were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. Gomer was the ancestor of Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. Javan was the ancestor of Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim, who settled along the coast. Gen 10;2

Japheth was the father of Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras, and they were the ancestors of the kingdoms named after them. 1Chron.1;5

Gog and Magog are also mentioned in the Qur'an as Yajooj and Majooj. Yajooj and Majooj according to a narration; a Haddith, they are from the progeny of Yafith ibn Nooh; Iaphet, son of Noah.  It is said that they will rise shortly after a great wall has been torn down. (The Berlin wall?)

When Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj are let loose, they rush headlong down every hill. Quran; el Anbiya 21:97

Gog's army will come to it's end and lay waste in the valley of Megiddo a.k.a; Armageddon

 a few miles south from Nazareth where Jesus lived.

The sixth angel emptied his bowl on the great Euphrates River, and it completely dried up to make a road for the kings from the east. An evil spirit that looked like a frog came out of the mouth of the dragon. One also came out of the mouth of the beast, and another out of the mouth of the false prophet. These evil spirits had the power to work miracles. They went to every king on earth, to bring them together for a war against God All-Powerful. But that will be the day of God's great victory. Remember that Christ says, "When I come, it will surprise you like a thief! But God will bless you, if you are awake and ready. Then you won't have to walk around naked and be ashamed." Those armies came together in a place that in Hebrew is called Armagedon. Rev 16;12

(Gog Defeated) The LORD said: Ezekiel, son of man, condemn Gog and tell him: You are the ruler of Meshech and Tubal, but I, the LORD, am your enemy! I will turn you around and drag you from the north until you reach the mountains of Israel. I will knock the bow out of your left hand and the arrows out of your right hand, and you and your army will die on those mountains. Then birds and wild animals will eat the flesh of your dead bodies left lying in open fields. I, the LORD, have spoken. I will set fire to the land of Magog and to those nations along the seacoast that think they are so secure, and they will know that I am the LORD. My people Israel will know me, and they will no longer disgrace my holy name. Everyone on earth will know that I am the holy LORD God of Israel. The day is coming when these things will happen, just as I have promised. When that day comes, the people in the towns of Israel will collect the weapons of their dead enemies. They will use these shields, bows and arrows, spears, and clubs as firewood, and there will be enough to last for seven years. They will burn these weapons instead of gathering sticks or chopping down trees. That's how the Israelites will take revenge on those who robbed and abused them. I, the LORD, have spoken. (The Burial of Gog) The LORD said: After Gog has been destroyed, I will bury him and his army in Israel, in Travelers' Valley, east of the Dead Sea. That graveyard will be so large that it will block the way of anyone who tries to walk through the valley, which will then be known as "The Valley of Gog's Army." The Israelites will spend seven months burying dead bodies and cleaning up their land. Everyone will help with the burial, and they will be honored for this on the day the brightness of my glory is seen. After those seven months, the people will appoint a group of men to look for any dead bodies left unburied. This must be done for seven months to make sure that the land is no longer unclean. Whenever they find a human bone, they will set up a marker next to it. Then the gravediggers will bury it in "The Valley of Gog's Army" (Hamon-Gog) near the town of "Gog's Army." After that, the land will be pure again. Ezekiel, son of man, I am going to hold a feast on Israel's mountains and offer sacrifices there. So invite all the birds and wild animals to come from every direction and eat the meat of sacrifices and drink the blood. The birds and animals will feast on the bodies of warriors and foreign rulers that I will sacrifice like sheep, goats, and bulls. I want the birds and animals to eat until they are full and drink until they are drunk. They will come to my table and stuff themselves with the flesh of horses and warriors of every kind. I, the LORD God, have spoken. Eze 39 CEV

It appears that the entire Islamic region will take up arms against Israel. Their (Turkish) leader will be a man referred to as Gog, which may be a title like Czar, Pharaoh or Caliph referring to a leader, who will be born in Magog, the region northwest of the Caspian sea.

"The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog (north-western coast of Caspian sea), the chief prince (or Rosh; head, not to be confused with Russia.) of Meshech and Tubal (Turkey); prophesy against him and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. Persia (Iran, Irak), Cush (Ethiopia, Sudan; Black Africa) and Put (Libya, Northern African nations) will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer (Azerbaijan) with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah (Armenia and other Turkic-speaking peoples who spread into other countries across central Asia) from the far north with all its troops—the many nations with you. " 'Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land. "

'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme. You will say, "I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars. I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land." Sheba (Jemen) and Dedan (north-west coast of the Persian Gulf, Kuwait, Saoudi Arabia) and the merchants of Tarshish (Syria?) and all her villages will say to you, "Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?"

"Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety, will you not take notice of it? You will come from your place in the far north, you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army. You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud that covers the land. In days to come, O Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I show myself holy through you before their eyes. " 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Are you not the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel? At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD. In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.' Eze 38 CEV

It is often assumed that Gog will be the leader of Magog, but he will only be born there. Magog may be located in a southern parts of Russia at the northern coast of the Caspian sea, but in the greater context it refers to the rest of the world. Gog first of all will be the ruler of Mesech and Tubal or Turkey. As soon as the Islamic world is united under his leadership, they will be referred to as Gog, because from that moment they will be united under his leadership.

In these days there will be two camps; the Islamic world contra the rest of the world; Gog and Magog.

Gog is not the leader of Magog.

It is Satan who leads them both into battle.

When the thousand years come to an end, Satan will be let out of his prison. He will go out to deceive the nations called Gog and Magog in every corner of the earth. He will gather them together for battle a mighty army, as numberless as sand along the seashore. And I saw them as they went up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded God’s people and the beloved city. But fire from heaven came down on the attacking armies and consumed them. " Rev 20;7. NLT

Magog is also referred to in the Book of Leinster as what could be the original inhabitants of Ireland. As such it would refer to the Picts who inhabited parts of England before the Norsemen invaded it. The Picts were a confederation of tribes in what later was to become central and northern Scotland from Roman times until the 10th century. They were the descendants of the Caledonians and other tribes named by Roman historians or found on the world map of Ptolemy. Pictland, also known as Pictavia, became the Kingdom of Alba during the 10th century and the Picts became the Fir Alban, the white men of Scotland. The Caledonians (Chaldeans) were named so after Chaldea, from where they moved long before Abraham did.

Magog, son of Iafeth, of his progeny are the peoples who came to Ireland before the Gaedil: to wit Partholan ... and Nemed ...and the progeny of Nemed, the Gaileoin, Fir Domnann, Fir Bolg and Tuatha De Danann. Book of Leinster.

It is possible that these Indo-Iranian tribes, or Aryans were held back a considerable while by the Caucasus mountain range where they lived in the area indeed called Magog). 

The Caucasus is seen as the cradle of the white race; hence the name Caucasian race. From there they spread throughout Europe as far as Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England and from there they crossed the Atlantic Ocean to what is now known as the United States of America, South Africa and Australia; the far ends of the earth, who may form an alliance with China and Japan, the kings from the east.

According to Flavius Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews; Gog refers to an individual who leads the invasion, Magog refers to a southern portion of the former Soviet Union, Rosh refers to the Scythians living in the Caucuses, Meshech and Tubal refers to Turkey, Persia refers to Iran, Cush refers to Sudan, Put refers to Libya (possibly Algeria and Tunisia as well), Beth-togarmah refers to Turkey, Armenia and other Turkish-speaking peoples who spread into other countries across central Asia.

Gog is a symbolic name, representing the leader of the world powers antagonistic to God (see also Rev. 20:8). Meshech and Tubal are understood to have been the same as the Moschi and Tibareni of the Greeks tribes that inhabited regions in the Caucasus. Rosh, which some would identify with Russia, must have designated a land and people somewhere in the same area. And therefore the Gog of Ezekiel must be viewed as in some sense the head of the high regions in the northwest of Asia. (Patrick Fairbairn, The Imperial Bible-dictionary).

In Hebrew however, besides poison or stubbornness, Rosh means head, as in leader in command or commander in chief, general in chief, or generalissimo and should be taken as such. Only Four english translations (ASV, YLT, Darby and an older King James version) use rosh as the name of a nation.

In 1Chron 5 there is mention of a Gog who is a descendant of Ruben son of Jacob, but his descendants settled on the west side of the Euphrate river. The Gog of the end battle will come from Magog which stands for a southern province of Russia or even for the rest of the (non-Islamic) world.

Cush and Put were sons of Ham and brothers to Mizraim (which means "two Egypts") and Canaan. Narrowly they are called Ethiopia (Cush) and Lybia (Put) but both were in possession of much larger territory in the past. The word Cush has a Hebrew root meaning black, and can be representative of the black races of Africa, while Put can represent the north part of the continent; Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, etc. Note that all are sons of Ham and therefore not Semitic. The common denominator among African nations is religion (Islam) not race (Arab).

It is not sure if Sheba, Dedan and Tarshish are part of Gog's army since they will be plundered by him. They may of course be incorporated afterwards.

Isaiah 60:9 speaks of the return of the jews to Israel in the later days. He says the 'Ships of Tarshish' will be among the first to bring Israels sons from afar. Tarsis has been located in Spain, near modern day Cadiz.

Antiquities of the Jews by Josephus (Note: the Scythians are from areas in and near Russia): Magog founded those that from him were named Magogites, but who are by the Greeks called Scythians.

In Dictionnaire philosophique (see under "Concatenation of Events"), Voltaire wrote: There is a genealogical tree of the events of this world. It is incontestable that the inhabitants of Gaul and Spain are descended from Gomer, and the Russians from Magog, his younger brother.

The Great Wall of China was known as the "Ramparts of Magog" in ancient times and was built to protect China from Magog. Some see a striking similarity between what's known about the Scythians and the Mongol Hordes of Genghis Kahn. Magog was a son of Japeth and inhabited central Asia. His children, the Scythians, are the ancestors of today's Russian people.

The Gog Magog Downs (also known as the Gog Magog Hills or simply the Gogs) are a range of low chalk hills, extending for several miles to the southeast of Cambridge in England. The earliest mention of the biblical name Gog and Magog for this region is found in a decree of 1574, forbidding students to visit the Gog Magog Hills on pain of a fine. Random excavations around the hills revealed the remains of defenses at Copley Hill and Cherry Hinton, not older than the Iron Age but the sites themselves are now known already to have been occupied in the Bronze Age. The Gogs have been related to Troy, the city is Turkey, where, according to the Edda, Odin and Thor came from before they settled in Norway.

It's instructive to view the common motivator as religion, not race. Some years ago, an editorial in the Jerusalem Post outlined the "Arab" plan as being composed of two phases. Phase one was to gain as much as possible through the inexpensive negotiating process while simultaneously weakening Israel and strengthening the Moslem coalition. Phase two, after no more negotiated gain can be made, is to go to war for the rest. Ref.
