Jesus is mentioned several times in the Koran and is held in high esteem in Islam.

It is known in Islam, that Jesus is the Messiah, al Masih, (pronounce; Mossée) and this was stated by Mohammed himself.

Allah's Apostle (Mohammed) said:
Allah will send
Masih ibn Maryam (
Messiah son of Mary). Thus he will descend near the White Eastern Minaret of Damascus, clad in two yellow sheets, leaning on the shoulders of two angels. Sahih Muslim, Vol. 8, P. 192-193

Allah's Apostle said:
I saw myself (in a
dream) near the Ka'ba last night, and I saw a man with whitish red complexion, the best you may see amongst men of that complexion having long hair reaching his earlobes which was the best hair of its sort, and he had combed his hair and water was dropping from it, and he was performing the Tawaf around the Ka'ba while he was leaning on two men or on the shoulders of two men. I asked, 'Who is this man?' Somebody replied, '(He is the) Messiah, Son of Mary.' Then I saw another man with very curly hair, blind in the right eye which looked like a protruding out grape. I asked, 'Who is this?' Somebody replied, '(He is the false)
Messiah, Al-Dajjal.'  Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 9, Book 87, No. 128

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah said:
I
dreamt at night that I was at the Kabah, and I saw a dark man like the most handsome of dark men you have ever seen. He had hair reaching to between his ears and his shoulders like the most excellent of such hair that you have seen. He had combed his hair, and water was dripping from it. He was leaning on two men or on the shoulders of two men doing tawaf around Kabah. I asked, 'Who is this?' It was said, 'al-Masih ibn Maryam.' Then we were with a man with wiry hair and blind in his right eye, as if it was a floating grape. I asked 'Who is this?' It was said to me, 'This is al-Masikh al-Dajjal.' Malik's Muwatta, Book 49, No. 49.2.2

Mujammi Ibn Jariyah al-Ansari stated that he heard the Messenger of Allah say:
The son of Mary will kill the Anti-Christ (Dajjal) at the door of Ludda.
Tirmidhi and Ahmad

.

The Messiah portrayed in these symbolic dreams is clearly identified as the son of Mary (ibn Maryam); Jesus.

Next to the Messiah, there is talk of the Mahdi (the guided one) who, is said to be an even more exalted figure than Jesus;

.

Abd Allah said: It is not as you say. Mahdi is a person behind whom Jesus will offer his prayers.
Ibn Tawus, Kitab al-malahim wa al-fitan, P. 179.

This "narration" is not attributed to Mohammed and only represent second hand "narrations" attributed to companions of Mohammed

and are considered unreliable. (Ref. http://www.irshad.org/islam/prophecy/mahdi.htm)

This kind of talk is the reason that Jesus, though he is much respected in Islam,

is not taken to be the Deliverer himself.

However;...

Hadith uttered by Mohammed clearly state that.

The Mahdi (lit., the guided one), was only another name for the Messiah - such was the announcement made by Ahmad, and in support of this was quoted the Prophet’s hadith:

"There is no Mahdi but the Messiah."

Ibn Majah, Ch. Shiddat al-Zaman.

(Ref. http://www.alislam.org/library/links/00000106.html )

This phrase comes from the Hadith books, (which are collections of writings that document the sayings and actions of the prophet Mohammed, one of the main sources of Islamic law and second in authority to the Koran) and it is not the only Hadith referring to Jesus as Mahdi.

"What will be your condition when the son of Mary will descend among you and he will be your Imam from among yourselves." (Bukhari, Kitabul Anbiya, Bab Nazool Isa)

That's what Christians say; He is one of us (Son of Man) and will come back to put an end to all mayhem and will be our King and High-Priest for a thousand years.

"By the One who owns my soul, it is nigh, of a certainty, that the son of Mary will appear among you. He will be a judge, he will be just; so he will break the cross and kill the swine and he will stop war." (Bukhari, Vol. 1, Babo Nozooli Isa)

*

"It is just possible that he who lives of you might meet Jesus the son of Mary who is the Mahdi and a just judge. He will break the cross and kill the swine..." (Masnad Ahmad Bin Hanbal, Vol. 2, p. 411)

*

"There is no Mahdi but Isa." (Ibn Maja, Bab Shiddatuz Zaman)

No matter how you twist and turn it; Jesus is both Masih and Mahdi.

Jesus is not A Mahdi; He is THE Mahdi.

So what is a Mahdi?

Mahdi; (pronounce; MèHdee, with an heavy H); Guided one. The doctrine of the mahdi gained currency during the religious and political upheavals of early Islam (7th–8th century) and received new emphasis in periods of crisis (e.g., after most of Spain was reconquered by Christians in 1212, and during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt). The title has been claimed by Islamic revolutionaries, notably in North Africa. Neither the Mahdi nor the Masih are named as such in the Koran, but the Haddith's state that the Mahdi will appear at the end of this time to restore justice on earth and establish universal Islam. (actually; Restore true religion.)

In Sunnite Islam, the "Mahdi" is just one of several important figures, while the "Mahdi" of Shi'ite Islam has a real eschatological importance, and is in the future the most important figure for Islam as well as the world.

The main principle of the Shi'ite Mahdi is that he is a figure that is absolutely guided by God, in which he is comparable to how the Christians think of Jesus Christ.

In Islam it mostly explained in the way that Jesus; (Issa, Eessa) is called "al Masih" (the Messiah) and that there is someone of even higher status, called "al Mahdi".

Although most Islamic people hold the Masih and the Mahdi for two different persons, the names are often used interchangeably, or attributed to an entirely different person, which, for an outsider who doesn't know any better, makes it hard to determine which is which.

Generally speaking, the expectation is that one man will stand up and lead the Islam forces in a war against the unbelievers during a seven year period. This figure will be followed up by Jesus who will descend from heaven who will stop the war and lead us into a new peaceful era.

According to the Hadith, Mohammed said the first figure, is of his family...

Hadhrat Abdullah bin Mas'ood reports from the Prophet, who said: The world will not come to pass until a man from among my family, whose name will be my name, rules over the Arabs. Tirmidhi Sahih, Vol. 9, P. 74; Abu Dawud, Sahih, Vol. 5, P. 207.

The Mahdi will be of my family, of the descendants of Fatima (the Prophet's daughter). Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 2, Tradition No. 4086.

Our Mahdi will have a broad forehead and a pointed (prominent) nose. He will fill the earth with justice as it is filled with injustice and tyranny. He will rule for seven years. Abu Dawud, Sahih, Vol. 2, p. 208; Fusul al-muhimma, p. 275.

This is the one usually called Mahdi.

Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA) narrated I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) say:

A section of my people will not cease fighting for the Truth and will prevail till the Day of Resurrection. He said: Jesus Son of Mary will then descend and their (Muslims') commander (Al Mahdi) will invite him to come and lead them in prayer, but he would say: No, some amongst you are commanders over some (amongst you). This is the honor from Allah for this Ummah. (Sahih Muslim, Book 1, No. 0293)

Whether the revolutionary commander is called Mahdi or not, and whether the Hadiths are reliable or not; the words of Mohammed himself are very clear. Jesus, son of Mary is the Messiah and the real Mahdi and he will come back from Heaven to stop war and set things straight and a new era of peace will begin, which is exactly what the Christians say.

Considering the fact that Mohammed himself said that Jesus is the Masih as well as the Mahdi, this unites these two persons into one, in the same manner that the (Jewish) Royal and Priestly Messiah are united in him. This leaves an other person who will lead Islam into a war against the Khafirs, the infidels. The Mahdi/Masih will be the one that descends from heaven to STOP WAR, not start one. He will slay the Dajjal (al Masikh) that is called antichrist by many Muslims and started it. This Dajjal may very well be the one who leads Islam into a terrible war against what they consider to be Khafirs, unbelievers, read; Christians.

Jesus is the Messiah as well as the Mahdi.

He is the same one.

Jesus Christ is our Savior.

If you are Muslim and you believe that there is a great chance that these Haddiths, dealing with Jesus, are unauthentic or unreliable;

you should consider who said so, and why.

Believe what is written in the Koran.

Believe what is written about Jesus.

Behold! Allah said: "O Jesus! I will take thee and raise thee to Myself and clear thee (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme; I will make those who follow thee superior to those who reject faith, to the Day of Resurrection: Then shall ye all return unto me, and I will judge between you of the matters wherein ye dispute. Koran Sura 3:55  (1935 Yusuf Ali Edition)

*

Muslims should bear witness of Christ...

When Jesus found unbelief on their part He said: "Who will be my helpers to (the work of) Allah?" Said the Disciples: "We are Allah's helpers: We believe in Allah and do thou bear witness that we are Muslims." "Our Lord! We believe in what Thou hast revealed, and we follow the Apostle; then write us down among those who bear witness. "Koran Sura 3:52 (1935 Yusuf Ali Edition)

... instead of twisting the words of Mohammed into a false religion.

Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do ye reject the rest? ... We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of Apostles; We gave Jesus the son of Mary Clear (Signs) and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever there comes to you an Apostle with what ye yourselves desire not, ye are puffed up with pride? --Some ye call impostors, and others ye slay! Koran Sura 2;85 Section 11.(1935 Yusuf Ali Edition)
