This page is about the soul; the Jeeva, the spirit; the Atma, reincarnation in the Bible and what we can expect after death.

All that lives has Chayah. Chayah means life; it is the old form of the word Chawah (Hawa), which is the name of Eve in Hebrew. Eve is called the mother of all living in Genesis 3;20. Sometimes translated as the mother of all living persons, but what it actually says is; the mother of all that is alive. The Greek named the earth Gaia (Gè, or Gaea). Gaia stood for vitality, the basin of life-force from which all life originated and to which all life returned. She arose from Chaos, the "energized" void; the primal higher waters of potentiality. The Chinese would say; -everything in the universe is Chi- (Qi; life force) -where Chi collects itself, a body is formed- because everything in the universe has its origin in this energy (these primal waters). The Sumerians already used the word Ki to name the (living) Earth, with its potential of life-force. The living soul abiding in everything in nature; the trees, the rivers, flowers, animals, the rocks even, are called Kami (entities) in Shintoism. Khe-chara (ether walker) is a name, used in Hindustan, for a soul-traveler or a siddhi. The Egyptians used the word Ka (Egyptian word for soul) to indicate the life force that made up the spiritual double of man, which was created at birth; the soul, the spiritual twin body, inhabiting and copying the physical body.

The soul; the "hidden man of the heart" (1Pe 3;4) sometimes experiences sudden inspirations and enlightening moments which the Romans said were caused by the Genius and according to the Greek by the Daimon (Latin; Daemon). This duplicate twin could indeed produce brilliant thoughts, which left us with the word genius but it could also induce us to rather questionable occupations which left us with the word Demon. One time you are guided by the Atma; the Holy Spirit, and another time your animal soul is driven by the natural needs of your body. It all depends on the power of the Spirit (Atma), present in our soul. Or the lack of it, giving the upper hand to animal urges and fears (inherent to the body) and even to malignant entities (earthbound souls; demons).

"He has a demon (Greek; dai'monion), and he is mad; why listen to him?" Joh 10;20.

In Parsism, (Zoroastrianism) an Ashavan (Holy person) possesses Asha (fire, spirit, holiness or righteousness) that is his Farohar, his guardian angel, the inner Light, mentioned in the Psalms that, due to its radiation literally functions as a shield, warding off evil.

You will surround him as with a shield. Ps 5:12

This Atma or Holy Spirit as we call it is our real guide, our guardian angel,

the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit. 1Pe 3;4
And the Lord will be your guide
at all times. Isa 58:11

Let not yours be the outward adorning with braiding of hair, decoration of gold, and wearing of fine clothing,

but let it be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable jewel of a gentle and quiet spirit,

which in God's sight is very precious. 1Pe3;4

This hidden person of the heart is our Self; our soul within us.  In the New Testament, originally written in Greek, our soul is called the Psyche; which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word Nephesh as used in the Old Testament.

The word Nephesh (from naphash to breathe) is used to indicate a soul. It is used for all living creatures. All living creatures are Nephesh; all living creatures are souls.

Nephesh actually means "Breather". All living creatures breathe. Not necessarily air. Fish too are called Nephesh and fish as you know, tend to breathe water.

The word is used to indicate;.

       - the life-force as such (the energy),

             - a person (the individual, the ego, the self, your essence; who you are.),

                    -  a desire (a will or emotion) and

                          -  body (the form, the shape).

Al these four aspects are energies; life-force, mindpower, willpower and even a body is made out of energy.

These four, if put together, will make a energy body "made of" lifeforce, having an emotional personality and a mind of its own;

a ghost,

which is in fact a soul without a physical body.

*

Energy bodies do not breathe air.

But why call it Breather if it doesn't breathe air?

Because a soul needs to breathe in Spirit to stay alive.

You think you are made of matter, but that is just an illusion.

 Everything is energy, everything is spirit which is an old word for energy.

The highest and purest form of Spirit comes from the Ultimate Source

a. k. a. God, and functions as a life-force to all the lower forms,

that need to breathe or inhale this Spirit to stay alive,

like plants opening up to the sun.

The ruach of God has made me, and the Neshama of the Almighty gives me (my soul) life. Job 33:4

ruach is spirit in general,

Neshama, the Breath of God is a life-force to the soul.

Nephesh in its turn is a life-force to the body; its breath.

The animal body is just a denser form of this spirit or energy.

*

Since everything is made of energy, everything needs energy to be sustained.

Everything is constantly breathing spirit or energy.

Electrons freely flow in and out of everything on earth.

If this process is stopped, all life will end.

Like a car that will stop when it runs out of fuel.

Like the characters in a computer game even,

that seize to exist when the power is cut off.

*

Everything is like swimming in an ocean of energy,

like fish in the water; an ocean of spirit.

Every living organism holds within him a matching volume of energy.

The contours of a body determine the shape of this body of energy.

This body of energy; our spiritual body is our soul.

In Hinduism, the individual animal soul is called the Jeeva (Bondage) and

Purusha, is "soul" in general, the ocean of which the jeeva is but a drop.

Adam; mankind is (should be) demonstrating a higher consciousness than animals. He is called Adam after the Adam of Genesis 2; the universal conscious soul. Eve too is called after the Eve of Genesis 2 (Chawah, Chayah) which means life. Hence she is called .

the mother of all who have life. Gen 3; 20  BBE

 The mother of all that's alive.

The first people, were named Adam and Eve after the universal soul Adam/Eve, which is a state of consciousness to indicate that a higher consciousness had descended onto Earth. Or call it; "Fallen into Earth" due to the pursuit of knowledge; eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge; primitive beings constantly training their brains resulting in an increase of brain capacity and an increase of intelligence; an increase of consciousness.

Primitive man had become Homo Sapiens; conscious beings.

Physical man starts out as a natural, animal-like being and through evolution in general and by living his lives on a personal level, he has the opportunity to reach a higher consciousness; to gain, to "breathe in" the highest and purest form of Spirit, which allows him to become more and more conscious of what is going on; - of the meaning of life really, which is to enjoy and experience life, in order to learn and be as good as you can be, gradually evolving into higher forms of existence.

It is this Spirit, or Atma, the original creational energy, that will keep the soul, the spiritual twin of the body intact and alive, even when the physical body has been put to rest and has decayed.

At death, urges and needs of the body disappear although memories might remain, as do certain qualities like intelligence, skills and character traits. After a while, this newly formed soul (Jeeva-Atma) will find (be appointed to, be drawn to) a new physical body (a new living (human) being) to dwell in, that’s suited for learning trough experience. It will attach itself to this new body that will be its vehicle. Doing so, it will take on its shape and a twin is created. This explains the innate skills of infant prodigies, (here's one for ya) and the past lives memories or unexplainable fears some people have. In principle, this learning process will go on until the goal is reached.

It is God who provides the soul with spirit. If a soul doesn’t have any Spirit left at the death of the physical body, it will vaporize and return to the Earth, as do all animal souls.

Is not their tent-cord torn away in them? they die, and without wisdom. Job 4;21 DBY

As the waters fail from the sea, and a river falls away and dries up, so man lies down and does not rise.  Job 14:11MKJV

He was speaking about the physical body; the animal body in which the human soul resides. It will die and its life-force will vaporize and collect itself in the basin of life-force that is our earth. If the human soul that resides in it has spirit, and most people do in some degree, this spirit, in its turn, will keep the soul alive and intact after its vessel, the body has served its purpose. The soul in principle can take on any form it wants, but will initially stick to the form it had while in the body. It will find rest in a place, according to its state of progress, until a suitable body and suitable circumstances are found, in which it can experience life, continuing its learning process, developing its consciousness (of God) and the ability to love indiscriminately.

It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 1Co 15:44  MKJV

Happy are they whose resting-place is in your house: ...They go from strength to strengthand appear before God in Zion. Ps 84:4

 *

All animals are souls.

And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living souls, (Nephesh chayah) and let fowl fly above the earth in the expanse of the heavens…  And God said, Let the earth bring forth living souls (Nephesh chayah) after their kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth, after their kind. And it was so. Ge 1:20 DBY

Some people explain soul as a breath, but that wouldn't make any sense in this verse.

Also, the animal soul is an earth-bound soul;

Who knoweth the spirit (ruach) of man that goeth upward, and the spirit (ruach) of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?   Ec.3:21 KJ21 MKJV

This is the reason, that blood should be drained so the soul may return to the reservoir; the Earth (Gaia).

Do not take it for food but let it be drained out on the earth like water. De 12: 24  BBE

The human (conscious) soul is the only one in which God himself places some of his own Spirit.

And the LORD God formed man (Adam) of the dust of the ground, (Adamah)  and breathed into his nostrils the breath (Neshama; Atma) of life; and man became a living soul (Nephesh - entity). Gen.2:7 MKJV

It is because of this Neshama, this Spirit sent from God; the Atma, (Egyptian; Atum; the Hebrew word Otsma means power.) as well as the (whirling) dust, the primal matter; the Adamah he was taken from, that Adam got his name, maybe to show, that Spirit and Matter in essence are the same.

Genesis 2, from 2; 4 on actually deals with the creation of the human (conscious) soul, as opposed to Genesis 1 which deals with the material creation of the universe, the Earth, the plants, animals, the evolution really, which resulted in the creation of man on the sixth day.

According to Genesis 2 Adam was in Eden before any life forms were created.

This is told in a story to visualize it, but you’ll have to read between the lines to understand it.

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, and every shrub of the field was not yet on the earth, and every plant of the field had not yet sprung up. For the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground. But there went up from the earth a mist and watered all the face of the ground. And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden. And there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food. The tree of life also was in the middle of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil…

And the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, You may freely eat of every tree in the garden, but you shall not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. And out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every fowl of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. And Adam gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the air, and to every animal of the field. But there was not found a suitable helper for Adam. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh underneath. And the LORD God made the rib (which He had taken from the man) into a woman. And He brought her to the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called Woman because she was taken out of man. Gen 2:4  MKJV

The idea that Adam was created before the plants and even before the hills, is also touched in the book of Job.

Were you perhaps born the first man and formed before the hills? Job 15;7

(numquid primus homo tu natus es et ante colles formatus. Job 15;7 Vulgata

According to the Breshit Rabbah, the Thora footnotes on Genesis, Adam originally reached from one side of the universe to the other. (B.R. 8. 1;21. 3;24.2, and Hagigah 12a.)

So this is not about the first physical man and his wife, mentioned in Genesis 1. We are speaking in scales of the expanding universal primal Light of creation. This early formed mix of light and darkness; spirit and primal water or primal matter, pure energy producing a soup of particles; the whirling dust of Adamah; we are talking about the universal soul Adam as a state of consciousness.

*

The whole concept of Creation is about Light being turned into earth; energy coagulating and freezing into matter. ..

And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Ge 1:3

Your dew is a dew of light. Isa 26:19

Light stands for energy but it also stands for consciousness, in which case it means;

That the spirit of the gods is in you, and that light and reason and special wisdom have been seen in you. Da 5:14

By praying to God and literally inhaling the Spirit of God, you are being provided with Spirit; you are like tapping in to the highest form of energy but also the highest form of consciousness.

The stories of Adam and Eve, same as most other stories in the Bible, originally were passed on verbally in Parable form, which made them easier to remember by the audience.

These Parables were about the Spirit of God; the Light and its effect on humans living in a "material" world.

To understand these matters you have to think in terms of light.

An enormous amount of energy was released at the Big Bang and this energy gradually turned into matter. This took place in stages; levels of density and levels of consciousness.

Two of those levels of density are spirit; consciousness (Adam; Atum) , and lifeforce; soul (Eve), and the second came forth from the first.

The whole package is called Adam.

Man and female in one; androgynous, the Twin; the hermaphrodite.)

The inside is Adam, the outside is Eve (his side).

Then God took some of Adam's side; the darker outside of the entity connected with (primal) matter, and made a help out of it to help him do his work in the garden. (Without life, nothing happens here on Earth; no (divine) work can be done.)  After which Adam said; This is power of my power (literally), this is kin of mine;  her energy is compatible to mine.

In the beginning, my Father descended to the physical plane

and lived on it as the first man, Adam.

His wife, Eve, was the Mother of our Souls.

Testimony of Mary 2;8

.

.

"Woman" came forth from "Man".

is about Creation.

About lower, denser energies being produced by higher ones.

Life comes forth from Spirit.

Primal matter came forth from primal water.

Primal water came forth from the Fire.

Inside all matter you will find the energy it is made of.

Light is called masculine, because it penetrates the darkness.

*

As said, Adam originally reached from one side of the universe to the other. This means that throughout the universe a high state of consciousness had been reached. Adam/Eve; (spirit and soul = consciousness) was "lured" by the snake into experiencing good as well as evil, to eat from the tree of knowledge the snake was sitting in. First Eve; the Human soul ate, and Adam followed her. First earthly life was established, then consciousness set in. Adam, the universal conscious light soul, being pervaded and sustained by the neshama (Atma), naturally followed Eve (life) in taking residence in matter, but doing so, a barrier was created between mankind and the source, which cost them the radiance of the Neshama of God. They became unaware of their inner Light. The inner Light is "hindered" by the (urges of the) flesh that covers it.

And for Adam and his wife the LORD God made coats of skins (Kotnot ‘or), and clothed them. Gen 3:21 MKJV

Kotnot ‘or; clothing of skin is a wordplay on Kotnot or (aur) which means clothing of light.

So, instead of in Light, from then on, they were clothed in skins; our bodies.

It is sometimes said that the snake; the "Leviathan of matter", was stripped of his skin which served Adam as garment. This is another way of saying that Man, defined by spirit and soul, became trapped in matter. Their inner light was buried or written in matter; Earth.

O LORD, … those who turn away from thee shall be written in the earth, for they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living water. Jer 17:13 RSV

Races emerge and fade away, civilizations rise and fall. Due to the temptations, urges, and needs and fears inherent to the flesh, and more so, because people forgot to pray - to "drink or breathe" Spirit - they lost their souls life force, the Neshama of God. From that point on the human soul was no different than an animal soul and died almost as soon as the body did.

.Adam had become an earthbound animal soul inhabiting a material body. In spite of his potential to become a conscious soul, Adam, primitive man, was but an animal race.

.

Adam had fallen into earth.

I said in my heart with regard to the sons of men that God is testing them to show them that they are but beasts. Ec 3:18

As the waters fail from the sea, and a river falls away and dries up, so man lies down and does not rise.  Job 14:11MKJV

For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, (ruach) and man has no advantage over the beasts; for all is vanity. All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all turn to dust again.   Ec. 3;19 RSV

These are those setting themselves apart, animal-like ones, not having the Spirit. Jude 1:19 MKJV

hii sunt qui segregant animales Spiritum non habentes Jude 1:19 VULGATA

So, the human soul as such, is not immortal;

The soul (Nephesh) that sins shall die. Eze 18:20 RSV

And everybody has to die;

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, in his erring; he is flesh. Yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years. Ge.6:3  MKJV

For we must all die, and (without spirit) we are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again.  2Sa 14:14  MJKV

Put not your trust in (like honorable) princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no help. When his breath departs he returns to his earth; on that very day his plans perish. Ps 146:3   RSV

*

Man, though he is in honor but understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.  Ps 49:20 BBE

It is the (amount of) spirit (ruach) in a man, the breath (Neshama) of the Almighty, that makes him understand. Job 32:8 RSV

As soon as a certain "amount" of Spirit, the Neshama is established in the soul, this Spirit keeps the soul alive, like a battery, as it were, because it is the souls life force; its breath. A soul breathes Spirit like a body breathes air. This is why the Spirit is called its breath.

The spirit (ruach) of God has made me, and the breath (neshama) of the Almighty gives me lifeJob 33:4   RSV

It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail. John 6:63  RSV

And "tapping in to" the Spirit, the soul, receiving its energy, stays alive even when the body is gone

For you will not let my soul be prisoned in the underworld (Sheol); you will not let your loved one see the place of death. Ps 16:10  BBE

But God will get back my soul; for he will take me from the power of death. Ps 49:15 BBE

And reincarnation is in progress...

For we must all die, and we are as water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. (but) God does not take a life, but has devised plans so that the outcast is not cast out from Him. 2Sa 14:14  MJKV

The Lord is the giver of death and life: sending men down to the underworld (Sheol) and lifting them up.  1Sam 2:6   BBE

He is doing that already!

And the tongue is a fire; it is the power of evil placed in our bodies, making all the body unclean, putting the wheel of life on fire, and getting its fire from hell. Jas 3:6 BBE

Blessed are the men whose strength is in thee, … They go from strength to strength. Ps 84:5   RSV  (birth after birth)

Jeremiah spoke of God telling him;

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. Jer 1:5

Even Isaiah, speaking of the end judging, mentioned his former incarnations;

Thy dead shall live, my dead bodies (corpses) shall ariseIsa 26:19  DBY

(interfecti mei resurgent) VULGATE ; my corpses will arise;

All his former incarnations.

Sheol beneath is stirred up … it rouses the shades to greet you.  Isa 14;9  RSV

These souls seem to be alive down there, waiting to return.

He looketh upon men, and if any shall say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. Lo, all these things God often worketh with man, To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. Job 33;27 Webster

"Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may see the light of life. Job 33;27 RSV

Many Jews believed in reincarnation;

And passing by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, Master, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? John 9: 1 MKJV

The man hadn’t sinned, but if he had, it could only have been before his birth.

The disciples must have thought this was possible.

Also, when Jesus asked them…

Who do men say that the Son of man is? They said, Some say, John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. Mt 16:13 BBE

Even the priests asked John the Baptist if he by any chance was Elija.

And they said to him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not.

Are you the prophet? And his answer was, I am not. John 1:21

Because he was born as John, a new identity and an other step forward and perhaps he didn't know.

But Jesus knew and gave the answer.

I say to you that Elijah has come, … Then the disciples saw that he was talking to them of John the Baptist. Mt 17:12   BBE

And if you are able to see it, this is Elijah who was to come. He who has ears, let him give ear. Mt 11: 14   BBE

In the Bible, in typical Mid-eastern terms, Reincarnation is called the anger or wrath of God;

He who believes in the Son has the Life of the Ages; he who disobeys (does not believe in) the Son will not enter into (higher) Life, but God's anger remains upon him. John 3:36

The anger of God remaining upon you is that you have to live in the flesh as mortal beings.

Mostly, however, it is called the judgment, the -forming of an opinion over someone- which takes place here on Earth.

He who trusts in Him does not come up for judgement.

He who does not trust has already received sentence. John 3:18   WEY

For a long time now...

From of old their judgement has been working itself out,

and their destruction has not been slumbering. 2Pe 2:3 WEY

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation

and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgement. 2Pe2;9

This is the judgment,

that the light is come into the world, and

men loved the darkness rather than the light;

for their works were evil.  John 3:19  ASV

So, the judgment, the punishment, that has been working itself out for a long time now, is that man chooses not to enter the Light and stays in darkness, the judgment he inflicts on himself, remaining in his fallen state; remaining under the wrath of God.

You have a free will; Use it.

Don't let others hold you back.

The people who walked in darkness (Matter) have seen a great light; they who dwell in the land of the shadow of death, (that’s us; we are living in the shadow of death) on them the light has shinedIsa 9:2   MKJV

That’s Christ, and he said;

Truly, truly, I say to you, He who hears my word and believes him who sent me, HAS eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. John 5:24  RSV

 Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death."  Joh 8;51 RSV

So, as long as the soul breathes Spirit, and sustains this Spirit by praying to and believing in God and doing his will, it does not die, it becomes immortal. The body might die, but the soul will not die. It is all about the soul, remember. And again, it all depends of the measure of Spirit we have received from God…

Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? 1Cor 3:16  RSV

The LORD, … forms the spirit of man within himZec 12:1  MKJV

It is the (measure of) spirit (ruach) in a man, the breath (Neshama) of the Almighty,

that makes him understand. Job 32:8  RSV

But there are differences of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.  And there are differences of workings, but it is the same God working all things in all.  But to each one is given the showing forth of the Spirit to our profit.   For through the Spirit is given to one a word of wisdom; and to another a word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; and to another faith by the same Spirit; and to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; and to another workings of powers, to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; and to another kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues. But the one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing separately to each one as He desires. 1Cor 12:4 MKJV.

The word ruach is used more in general; neshama is the personal amount of Spirit we’ve received.

The spirit which God put into our hearts has a strong desire for us.  Jas 4:5  BBE

The spirit (neshama) of man is the lamp (nir) of the LORD. Pr 20:27 RSV

Behold, the eye (ayn; eye or; well) of the LORD is upon those who fear Him. Ps 33:18   RSV

The light of the body is the eye. Therefore, when thine eye is single, (Vulgata; simplex; in unity) thy whole body also is full of light. But when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Lu 11:34   AV

Teach me thy way, O LORD… unite (Yechida) my heart… Ps 86:11   RSV (soul and spirit)

Do not quench the Spirit. 1Th 5:19   RSV

Your spirit is not a body; it's a force, an energy and a consciousness.

Now, if we let the spirit guide us, through Jesus Christ, we are called children of God;

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.  Ro 8:16 MKJV

And after leaving our physical body, whether male or female at death, we may all be called sons of God, due to our inner Light.

Without the differences of gender inherent to the physical world.

Resuscitation means the drawing forth of the spirit from the body, and its introduction into the spiritual world; this is commonly called the resurrection. Swedenborg Heaven and Hell 447

For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in Heaven.  Mt 22:30   MKJV

We ourselves, … wait and long for open recognition as sons through the deliverance of our bodiesRo 8:23   WEY

I said, You are gods; all of you are the sons of the Most High. Ps 82:6

Angels are called "gods"from the reception of the Divine from the Lord. Swedenborg Heaven and Hell, sect. 1 footnotes (p18)

We can be angels, so we can be gods.

But even this is not the ultimate goal of our soul. The ultimate goal lies in a lasting composition of matter, soul and spirit. Our body will be transformed into a mixture of body, soul and spirit, with the capability of acting and moving about in all three worlds.

Lo! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, (die, at the second coming) but we shall all be changed. 1Co 15;51  RSV

.

But of that day and hour no one has knowledge, not even the angels in heaven, or the Son, but the Father only…Then two men will be in the field; one is taken, and one let go; Two women will be crushing grain; one is taken, and one let go. Mt 24;36  BBE

.

It has not yet been revealed what we shall be. But we know that when He shall be revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 1Jo 3;2  BBE

We will be similar to Jesus after his resurrection; we will not be mere ghosts;

As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood among them. But they were startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your hearts?  See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself ; handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have. Lu 24;36  RSV

.But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 1Co 15;38   RSV

And in such a body Jesus went to heaven.

So that he might be the first among a band of brothersRo 8;29  BBE

As such He will return and the bodies of those who are alive at the second coming, who carry the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, will be transformed into new glorified bodies to rule with Christ for a thousand year period, after which a new sorting will occur as is written in the Book of Revelations.

And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years…  And they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.  Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. The second death has no authority over these, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with Him a thousand years.  And when the thousand years have expired, ( ! ) Satan will be loosed out of his prison. And he will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle. The number of them is as the sand of the sea. And they went up over the breadth of the earth and circled around the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of Heaven and devoured themAnd each one of them was judged according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the Lake of Fire. This is the second death. And if anyone was not found having been written in the Book of Life, he was cast into the Lake of FireRev 20: 2   MKJV

Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." John.12:31   RSV

So take care how you give hearing, for to him who has (spirit) will be given, and from him who has not will be taken even what he seems to have. Lu 8:18   BBE  (see below)

For the reward of sin is death; but what God freely gives is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro 6:23

Each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work (accomplishments) is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 1Cor 3:13   RSV

"Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." ...They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Daniel 3:25 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap. Malachi 3:2 The Lord will wash away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. Isaiah 4:4 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, Deuteronomy 4:24 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. Numbers 31:23 This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.' "Zechariah 13:9 And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,' declares the LORD, 'and I will be its glory within.' Zech 2:5 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. . Dan 7:10

This fire is God himself;

"Our God is a consuming fire." Heb 12:29 MKJV

Second death is when even your soul dies.  The first time only your body dies, the second death is when your soul dies, which makes it permanent.

This is not Hell, this is the final Judgement. Hell is the translation of the Hebrew word "Gehenna", which refers to the "valley of Hinnom" south of Jerusalem, the garbage dump where deceased animals and waste used to be burned.

Hell is not to a place where souls undergo everlasting suffering for all times. The place under the Earth, that is often mentioned, is called Sheol, (Eg. thirsty for life.) in the Old Testament, and Hades or Tartaros (the deepest pit of gloom; the lowest section of Hades.) in the New Testament. This is where the fallen angels are.

For if God did not spare sinning angels, but delivered them to chains of darkness, thrust down into Tartarus. 2Pe 2;4

All these places usually are, sadly enough, translated with "Hell", which led to the belief that Hell is a place under the Earth where lost souls burn forever.

But Hades (from Gk. Haides, the god of the underworld) is the place that the Egyptians called Amenti; the abode  of the dead where Osiris rules the souls of the deceased. This storage place contains the souls of people who haven't yet chosen to follow the Light, or who have been deceived into believing there is no Light to enlighten them; that there is no God. These souls remain as (darkened) shades in Sheol; thirsty for earthly life, waiting to go back to an earthly life. These souls however, are not dead.

Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. Jon 2:2 RSV

Sheol beneath is stirred up to meet you when you come, it rouses the shades to greet you. Isa 14:9 RSV

and there is a way out...

Thou hast delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.  Ps 86:13 RSV

At the end of times, maybe when the Earth itself is drawn into the fiery center of the Milky Way or maybe at some other cosmic event, Hades too, being situated within the Earth, will be "thrown in the lake of fire" which is Gehenna, souls will be judged, whether for good or for bad, and the suffering will end.

What God of Love would He be if He surrounded Himself with an everlasting place of suffering and pain or left a place like that to be forgotten, burning underneath the Earth?  Hell is not for ever.

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." Rev 21;8

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. Re 20:14

But when endowed with God's Spirit or; anointed, or christened with God's Spirit (Christ means anointed one) you have a spirit of God enlightening, vitalizing your soul...

I will make the third part go through the fire, cleaning them as silver is made clean, and testing them as gold is tested. Zec.13:9

When you pass through the waters I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you Isa 43:2

When all creation visible and invisible, as the Lord created it, shall end, then every man goes to the great judgment, and then all time shall perish, and the years, and thenceforward there will be neither months nor days nor hours, they will be adhered together and will not be counted. There will be one aeon, and all the righteous who shall escape the Lord’s great judgment, shall be collected in the great aeon, for the righteous the great aeon will begin, and they will live eternally, and then too there will be amongst them neither labour, nor sickness, nor humiliation, nor anxiety, nor need, nor brutality, nor night, nor darkness, but great light. And they shall have a great indestructible wall, and a paradise bright and incorruptible, for all corruptible things shall pass away, and there will be eternal life. 2Enoch 65;5

So much for second death...

But you have to make up your mind.

You either are linked to the Earth as an earthbound soul, or linked to God's Holy Spirit; the Atma within you. That is the choice we all have to make. Up till then you're neither warm or cold.

To him who overcomes I will give of the fruit of the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God and you will be in Paradise. Re 2:7

He saves our souls.

               . . . _ _ _ . . .

That's what he does and that's why he is called the Messiah.

May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1Th 5:23  RSV

Earth is the mother of all life forms. The Father; God, the Holy Spirit is the source of everything; energy and matter, spirit and flesh, Heaven and Earth. He released his Spirit in our universe at what we call the Big Bang. The Father gives life; the Mother merges this life with matter (Lat. Mater; mother.) and produces the different shapes of life; souls. Earth, so to speak, contains within her the basin of life-force from which these souls arise. All life on earth is being born and being ended; all life-forms at the end of their lifetime will die and their life-force will bubble up again and again, taking on different shapes until the right genetic combination; an intelligent mind, is found, suitable of receiving the Spirit, which is like a ray of God's personality; his consciousness providing it with an unselfish drive to be good, as opposed to the animal natural urges of the material body that are selfish in essence. The human race has the potential of forming newborn individual souls that are able to rise above the animal state. Since God is an eternal being, his Spirit is able to eternally sustain such a soul even when its body has died. And a newborn soul has formed. This merging of a ray of God's Spirit with a soul is what differentiates humans from animals. To put it in mystical terms; Adam, a ray of God's Spirit (Atma); a "son of God" is now married to the soul; Eve his bride. Together they form a human soul, living in a physical body. The first of these humans were named after that which made them human; Adam and Eve. Male and female; spirit and soul. Such a newborn soul may have to undergo yet several other submergings to be refined and perfected by the process of reincarnating until the time has come that the bond is strong enough to ascend to higher planes of existence. All intelligent souls have a free will, so the outcome isn't set. Souls may ascend to higher planes, but may also descend to lower planes as a result of their choices and actions during their lifespan on earth, but until the end of times is reached, they will receive chances to ascend.

Underworld; Hades ("invisible") or Amenti (who gives and takes) or Sheol (Egyptian Sheoulah; "thirsty for life") is the realm of the dead, comparable with the Hindu Devachan. It is like the "Top floors" of Gaea or Gaya; the basin of animal soul, concentrated beneath the Earth's surface, where the shades remain, thirsty for an other try in the world of the living. The bottom floor being the dark Tartaros; the Hindu Avichi.

After death you enter hat was called by Swedenborg; the "World of spirits", from where you are drawn into certain spheres, where you are joined with kindred minds who are on the same wavelength so to speak. This difference in wavelength is what separates you from the rest; the others you won't be able to see or hear. There are higher spheres, called Heavens or Paradise (or the Sumerian Aralu (Arulu), where entering each section of it, you loose some of your material inclinations, the way Ishtar had to give up one layer of garment at each portal until nothing was left except her inner "naked" Self), and lower spheres called Hell, Hades or Underworld and Gehenna. You may be creating your own environment there. Such an environment may be nice or nasty. That's up to you. You may be drawn to kindred minds and their dwellingplaces. Emanuel Swedenborg, in his book Heaven and Hell, about the afterlife wrote;

… At the present time nearly every one is in such a state that he has some knowledge of truths, and from his knowledge and understanding gives some thought to them, and conforms to them either much or little or not at all, or acts contrary to them from a love of evil and consequent false belief. In order, therefore, that man may have in him either heaven or hell, he is first brought after death into the world of spirits, and there with those who are to be raised up into heaven good and truth are conjoined, and with those who are to be cast down into hell evil and falsity are conjoined. For neither in heaven nor in hell is any one permitted to have a divided mind, that is, to understand one thing and to will another; but every one must understand what he wills, and will what he understands. Therefore in heaven he who wills good understands truth, while in hell he who wills evil understands falsity. So in the intermediate state the falsities that the good have are put away, and truths that agree and harmonize with their good are given them; while the truths that the evil have are put away, and falsities that agree and harmonize with their evil are given them, This shows what the world of spirits is. (425). The world of spirits is not heaven, nor is it hell, but it is the intermediate place or state between the two; for it is the place that man first enters after death; and from which after a suitable time he is either raised up into heaven or cast down into hell in accord with his life in the world. (421) …In the world of spirits there are vast numbers, because the first meeting of all is there, and all are there explored and prepared. The time of their stay in that world is not fixed; some merely enter it, and are soon either taken into heaven or are cast down into hell; some remain only a few weeks, some several years, but not more than thirty… those who have passed from the world of spirits into heaven or into hell, unless they have a like disposition from a like love, no longer see or know each other…(426-427). I have seen some that have recently arrived from the world, and have recognized them from their face and speech; but seeing them afterwards I did not recognize them. Those that had been in good affections appeared with beautiful faces; but those that had been in evil affections with misshapen faces; for man's spirit, viewed in itself, is nothing but his affection; and the face is its outward form.  (457) The world of spirits appears like a valley between mountains and rocks, with windings and elevations here and there. The gates and doors of the heavenly societies are visible to those only who are prepared for heaven; others cannot find them. There is one entrance from the world of spirits to each heavenly society, opening through a single path which branches out in its ascent into several. The gates and doors of the hells also are visible only to those who are about to enter, to whom they are then opened. When these are opened gloomy and seemingly sooty caverns are seen tending obliquely downwards to the abyss, where again there are many doors. Through these caverns nauseous and fetid stenches exhale, which good spirits flee from because they abominate them, but evil spirits seek for them because they delight in them. For as every one in the world has been delighted with his own evil, so after death he is delighted with the stench to which his evil corresponds. (429)   Swedenborg; Heaven and Hell

When in doubt, follow your nose... These spheres are sometimes theatrically called the "Nine Circles of Hell", or, the "Compartments of Paradise" for that matter. The point is; you are drawn to kindred minds. If you enjoyed displaying Love, kindness, friendship, wisdom, loyalty and such, you'll be in contact with similar minds and be in Paradise and your new companions will display Love, kindness, friendship, wisdom, loyalty and such to you. If you enjoyed being evil, shrewd, deceitful and treacherous or violent and such, you'll find yourself in Hell and they will do the same to you.

In disclosing his acts to a man after death, the angels to whom the office of searching is assigned look into his face, and their search extends through the whole body, beginning with the fingers of each hand, and thus proceeding through the whole. As I wondered at this the reason was given, namely, that as all things of the thought and will are inscribed on the brain, for their beginnings are there, so are they likewise inscribed on the whole body... This shows what is meant by the book of man's life spoken of in the Word, namely, that all things that he has done and all things that he has thought are inscribed on the whole man, and when they are called forth from the memory they appear as if read in a book, and when the spirit is viewed in the light of heaven, they appear as in an image. ... every least thing that a man has thought, willed, spoken, done or even heard and seen, is inscribed on his internal or spiritual memory;' and that what is there is never erased, since it is also inscribed on the spirit itself and on the members of its body... Let no one believe, then, that there is any thing that a man has ever thought in himself or done in secret that can be concealed after death; but let him believe that all things and each single thing are then laid open as clear as day. (463) When he has come into the enjoyment of light the spiritual angels render to the new spirit every service he can possibly desire in that state; and teach him about the things of the other life so far as he can comprehend them. But if he has no wish to be taught the spirit longs to get away from the company of the angels. Nevertheless, the angels do not withdraw from him, but he separates himself from them; for the angels love every one, and desire nothing so much as to render service, to teach, and to lead into heaven; this constitutes their highest delight. When the spirit has thus withdrawn he is received by good spirits, and as long as he continues in their company every thing possible is done for him. But if he had lived such a life in the world as would prevent his enjoying the company of the good he longs to get away from the good, and this experience is repeated until he comes into association with such as are in entire harmony with his life in the world; and with such he finds his own life, and what is surprising, he then leads a life like that which he led in the world. (450) Swedenborg; Heaven and Hell

The punishment will be your own doing. Although Swedenborg didn't believe in reincarnation, it is written that God will abandon nobody. Not even in Hell.

The Lord is the giver of death and life: sending men down to the underworld (Sheol) and lifting them up. 1Sam 2:6 BBE.

You will always have a chance to repent and turn back to God. Move on to another lifespan on the surface of the earth and from there, who knows to other planets or higher spheres. The question is; are you willing to do this? In heaven people are able to grow and make progress towards the Light, but in hell, trapped in once own anger, stubbornness and deceit it is very hard indeed to turn around and face the Light. If someone persistently refuses to "repent", he will eventually loose all grace that's left in him and burn out and fade away in Hell.

Hell, (hel, helle, khaljo, Hölle) is derived from the old words for "Hollow", as in Cave, or "Hall" within the earth, as in one of the Halls of Amenti. Its lowest level is comparable with Tartaros, the lowest regions of Hades and as such comparable with the "Hell of Dante" (Inferno = underneath). Hell, however, is synonymous to Satan. Satan is synonymous to the lot of evil doers, sinners and/or demons driven by the Yetzer ha Ra the urge to do evil. The same as Paradise, Hell essentially is a state of mind. After death you'll be looking for, or brought in contact with people of a similar state of mind. Hell is being in the company of sinners and demons, being overwhelmed and tormented by that all evil spirit. All evil and falsity are from Hell, that is, from the devil, for Hell is the devil. Swedenborg, Arcana Coelesta 4151. You are drawn to kindred minds. All kinds of metaphors are used to describe the pains of Hell. If you liked to drink excessively during your life span on earth, you may find yourself in the company of annoying drunks, as in the "Hell of Drunks". If you "worshipped" money, you might find yourself in dark smelly pigsties, surrounded by suspicious money sick people (the Hell of Misers), if you liked to indulge in sex, you might wake up in an everlasting sleazy brothel called the "House of Temptation". Those who were vengeful and have become wild and cruel, love the presence of dead corpses and seek out similar conditions. You may find yourself in a dungeon being ripped apart or in a fiery pit being burned alive to no end. Chinese mythology uses names like; the "Hell of Being Cut to Pieces", the "Hell of Boiling Oil", of the "Upside Down Sinners", the "Hell Where People are Skinned Alive", and the Hell of the Oily Dragon, which indicates that it's not much fun to be trapped in there. Which in fact is the literal meaning of the word Avichi; "not funny". The point is that you seek out the environment where you want to be, which makes it very hard to change for the better. To some this may not sound so bad, a cool place filled with your kind of people, but there is a constant enmity between the inhabitants of hell, a warfare which outside of hell sounds like the gnashing of teeth. It's a place of ongoing suffering, an eternal one at that. There are torments in hell, but not from God, but from the people in it.  Hellfire, according to Swedenborg, actually is; a craving to do evil things that come from self-love and love of the world, and since all the people in the hells have this kind of craving, when the hells are opened one can see something fiery, with smoke, the sort of thing one sees in great conflagrations. There is something fiery from the hells where self-love rules, and something flame-like from the hells where love of the world rules...It should however be noted that the people who are in the hells are not "in fire" - the fire is an appearance. They are not in fact conscious of any burning there, only of the same kind of warmth they felt before, in the world. (59)   Even twenty-three minutes in Hell, as described by Bill Wiese (click on picture) feel like an eternity. And it may last an eternity, but thank God, it's not an ever lasting one, since at the end of times Hell with everything in it, and even Death itself, will be thrown into the Lake of Fire (Re 20:14) and be destroyed. There is an end to it. The Divine Principle states, "God intends to abolish hell completely after the passage of time necessary for each individual to make restitution for his sin." (Resurrection 3.3) In the Bible Sheol, Hades; the underworld, as well as Gehenna unfortunately all are usually translated with the word "Hell".

Gehenna (also; Appolyon, Grk. laying waste, destruction) however, the word most commonly translated with "Hell", is named after the waste dump just outside the gates of ancient Jerusalem, where waste was burned and destroyed. Unclean animals and waste were burned there, and lepers scavenged the refuse. Gehenna, (Gey ben Hinnom גיא בן הינום valley of the son of Hinnom) in old days, had been the site of pagan human sacrifice and the final resting place of the bodies of executed criminals. In the Biblical sense it is a place of destruction comparable with the dark Tartaros; the Hindu Avichi. In the Bible one usually descends to Sheol or Hades and one usually is thrown or cast in Gehenna.

Tartaros is like the very bottom of Hades. The worst place to be. Tartaros, sometimes called Orcus from the Greek horcos an oath, is where the fallen angels reside, bound apparently by the oath they swore at mount Hermon. Tartaros is also the prison of persistently unwilling souls, comparable to the Hindu Avichi. It is their destruction by fire (Abaddon; to cut off); it is where they eventually die their second death, physical death being the first one. Such a soul, due to a complete lack of Spirit, is dissolved and merges, like any other animal soul, with Gaea, the basin of animal soul within the Earth; nothing left of your personality; you're history, gone forever. (Actually, you might say your life-force, your soul is reborn as an animal.)

Limbo, (edge, border or outskirts) Limbus Patrum or Limbus Puerorum, the places where the (fore)Fathers are and the (unbaptized) children was an invention of Pope Gregorius the Great in 593 explaining the term "Bossom of Abraham", which both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, following early Christian writers, understood as a temporary state of souls awaiting entrance into Heaven. Since the Church has always looked upon reincarnation as being a heathen concept, a solution had to be found for very young or unbaptized but blameless children and for all the righteous people who never have heard of Christ because they have not been reached yet or lived before he was born. These people were supposed to live happily on the edge of Hell awaiting the Day of Judgment when Christ would sort them all out. Neither the Eastern Orthodox Church nor Protestantism accepts the concept of a limbo of infants; but, while not using the expression "Limbo of the Patriarchs", the Eastern Orthodox Church lays much stress on the resurrected Christ's action of liberating Adam and Eve and other righteous figures of the Old Testament, such as Abraham and David, from Hades. Mormons teach that "all who have died without a knowledge of [the] gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God." Jehovah's Witnesses, Christadelphians, and others, discarding all verses in the Bible referring to Hades and Sheol, have taught that the dead are unconscious or even nonexistent, awaiting their destiny on Judgment Day on which all the dead first will be recreated by God, after which the sinners again will be destroyed in fire. The Zoroastrian concept of hamistagan is similar to limbo. Hamistagan is a neutral state in which a soul that was neither good nor evil awaits Judgment Day. Swedenborgians believe in the "World of spirits" (see above) where the dead arrive to be assigned their place in the afterlife, either in Hell or in Paradise. In Islam, which denies the existence of Original Sin in totality, the concept of Limbo exists as Barzakh, the state which exists after death prior to the day of resurrection. During this period sinners are punished and the faithful rest in comfort. The concept of underage children is that they go exempt of sin and that they are classed as Muslims and after death they go to heaven where they are cared for by Abraham. As there are reported to be mansions or subdivisions in the Kingdom of Heaven differentiated by piety, culture and descent and such, the term Bossom of Abraham probably means; added to the clan of Abraham which would include Jews both of physical descent or by faith, Muslims and also, in a spiritual sense the Christians.

Purgatory (Lat. means of cleansing) is not mentioned in the Bible, but may be seen as going through fire while approaching God, having all your "sins" "washed" away by that fire. In our physical reality (though not supported by the Catholic Church) this means, going through the world of the living, walking the path of lives, (which may include several Planets) on your way to Paradise, while being tested in the fire of temptations, in other words; Reincarnation; called in Mid-Eastern terms "Judgment"; being judged by God, while remaining under what is called the "Wrath of God".

Paradise is an everlasting state of happiness in the proximity of God, (or with God in your proximity) being born again; reborn as a Phoenix from the fire of temptations, preferably by your own virtues but more likely by the grace of God, letting you try over and over again. Paradise is comparable with the Hindu Nirvana. Paradise is attainable for everybody who opens up to God. (Even the Serpent once lived in Paradise.)

Life is what you make of it. Some people living in deplorable conditions are able to turn these into their own personal little Paradise, letting others share in it. Some, who seem to have it made, are actually living in their own personal Hell even pulling others down with them. Which goes to show that you don't necessarily have to dig so deep to find yourself in Hell. As you know, there are Hellish and Paradisiacal places on Earth. Sometimes when you travel through a country, you'll notice a gradual change of environment. The "Nine Circles of Hell" can also be found right here on the surface of the Earth. It is not in vain that Satan is called the god of this world,(2Co4:4) and Satan is synonymus to Hell.

Evil in man is hell in him, for it is the same thing whether you say evil or hell. And since man is the cause of his own evil he is led into hell, not by the Lord but by himself. Swedenborg, Heaven and Hell 547

You will not be punished for your anger; you will be punished by your anger. Buddhist saying

The Supreme Spirit in the body is also called the witness, the guide, the supporter, the enjoyer, and the great Lord or Parama-atma. Bhagavad-Gita 13.22

The Holy Spirit is the essence of God; his Love and personnality; His warmth emanating from Him the way Solar-wind emanates from the Sun. God actually is the Sun of Heaven.

The word Spirit is used in many ways; guts, temper, liveliness, a certain mood you're in, a certain atmosphere, the spirit of an age. In this Site however the word Spirit is used in the original sense; a form of healing, creative energy emanating from God; his Holy Spirit, Love, which when overshadowing your soul, or better yet; illuminating or enlightening your soul, becomes part of you; your very own spirit, a direct line to God.

It is the Spirit in every man that sustains his soul, his spiritual body.

Paul called it “the celestial body” or “spiritual body ” (soma pneumatikon) (I Corinthians 15:40). In Sufism it is called “the most sacred body ” (wujud al-aqdas) and “supracelestial body ” (asli haqiqi). In Taoism, it is called “the diamond body,” and those who have attained it are called “the immortals” and “the cloudwalkers.” In Tibetan Buddhism it is called “the light body.” In Tantrism and some schools of yoga, it is called “the vajra body,” “the adamantine body,” and “the divine body.” In Kriya yoga it is called “the body of bliss.” In Vedanta it is called “the superconductive body.” In Gnosticism and Neoplatonism, it is called “the radiant body.” In the Alchemical tradition “the golden body.” The Emerald Tablet calls it “the Glory of the Whole Universe” and  the alchemist Paracelsus called it “the astral body.” In the Hermetic Corpus, it is called “the immortal body ” (soma athanaton). In some mystery schools, it is called “the solar body.” In Rosicrucianism, it is called “the diamond body of the temple of God.” In ancient Egypt it was called “the luminous body or being” In Old Persia it was called “the indwelling divine potential” (fravashi or fravarti).

Confusing is, that the Hindu word Atma is commonly used as a name for the human soul. It is obvious however, that the name has strong connections with the Egyptian god Atum or Ataom, which is how Mani called his spiritual guide. The Jeeva is the Hindu term for animal life-force; the animal soul. When connected to, pervaded by, and thus guided by the Atma it is called Jeeva-Atma; (Jeevottama) Atma for short. The lower part is always called after the higher part that is leading it. Same here; we too call a soul a spirit when it is overshadowed, or rather; - enlightened by the Holy Spirit. This also leads to confusion, so it pays to be more specific. Atma is the individual spirit. It is what we call Adam. Influencing a soul and the mind it produces a higher Self. If on the other hand a soul is being influenced by bodily urges, self preservative motives like fear, greed and egoism in general, we speak of a lower self. This lower self is the Ego you have to get rid of in order to reach Nirvana. Jeeva is animal soul residing in all living creatures. Eve, (Chawah; life) is pretty much the same, only she is that soul residing in a intelligent human body which enables her to connect to Adam; her "Spouse". Atman, is the power itself, the Spirit of God by whom you may be influenced in greater or lesser degree. It is the amount of Holy Spirit, your inner Light, your spirit, your guide, which separates man from animals. Of course the ability to move objects from A to B also comes in handy when you want to use tools and build a house or a civilization for that matter, which is why the human body lends itself so well for this purpose. This does not mean however that Homo Sapiens is the only candidate in the Universe that may have reached this goal. In fact, the snake (before his arms and feet were removed by God) once was called the wisest among all animals in the Garden of God (Ge 3:1).

"Thou art not the bodies, nay not yet the soul, which is the life of bodies. But Thou art the life of souls."

Confessions

Spirit stands to soul like soul stands to body.

NDE's; Near Death experiences as well as out of body experiences prove that the soul can observe things when detached from the body. In the first the body is actually often brain-dead and in the second the body is sleeping or in trance. This body, while awake,  can see, hear and think with its eyes ears and brain, but the soul also can see hear and think and observe its physical body from above, even when it is dead, hear what is being said and wonder about it. This should prove that the human soul is a conscious being usually occupying an animal body (which is a soul on its own right, since all animals are also called souls).

People who have had out of body experiences often say they saw a silver colored "umbilical" cord between them and their vessels; their bodies.

Let your mind be turned to your Maker in the days of your strength...Before ever the silver cord is cut, or the vessel of gold is broken, or the pot is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the water-hole; And the dust goes back to the earth as it was before. Then the dust of mortals goes back to the ground as it was before, and the breath of life (nephesh chaya, actually; living soul) goes back to God who gave it. Ec 12;1

Since everything is a soul that is alive; Plants too are alive and may for that reason be called souls, but there is a difference.

And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the heavens, and to every creeper on the earth which has in it a living soul (Nephesh chayah) shall be every green plant is for food. Ge 1:30 BBE

The soul of plants differs from the soul of animals. Plants don't have lower urges; animals do. Plants do what they do; animals do what they want. (Generally speaking.) There’s no problem with eating plants with their juices, (except when they’re poisonous of course) but we may not eat the blood of animals…The life (Nephesh; soul with its lower urges) of the flesh is in its blood...You may not take any sort of blood as food. Le 17:11

*    The word ‘otsem which is translated with bone, can just as easily mean power or self.

*    The word basar, translated with flesh, also means kin or close family or even oneself, and the word tsel, which is translated with rib, really should be translated with "side". In the Old Testament, this word appears about 35 times and each time in a different meaning than rib. It stands for the side wing of a house, or in this case, it can be seen as the darker area of an orb of light, the shady outside of it; the side, or left column as it is described in the Zohar. Darker because of its entwinement with matter, thus forming a shadow.

*    Unlike Nature (Lillith) with whom Adam used to be united, Eve was a spiritual entity; she was his kin.

*    The Hebrew word ‘ap, which is translated with nostrils or nose, also means forehead, which might be a more appropriate place to put the Atma.

It is a hint at the third eye, the Jewel in the Lotus.

My Prakriti (or material nature) is the womb wherein I place the seed (of spirit or Purusha) from which all beings are born. Bhagavad-Gita 14.03

That is why God is called the Father. The words matter and mother have the same Latin root; Mater; mother.

Matter is female because she is like a womb enclosing the Light that is in her, because deep inside matter you will only find energy, Light, or Spirit.

Matter is "Mother Earth", because, penetrated by this Light she brings forth all forms of earthly life; all living souls. In Sumerian mythology An, the Spirit, sometimes even called Holy An, literally; Holy Spirit "married" Ki; earth and produced Enlil, the Lord of ghosts; the Lord of souls; earthly life.

Matter; Mother Earth is the mother of all souls; she in fact is the nurturing room of all awakening souls. These souls guided by their inner light, the Father, will be drawn to the Light and return to their source which makes the circle complete.

-He created the heavenly beings with His right hand and the terrestrial with His left.-  Menahot 36b; Sifre D., 35. ref. Ginsberg Leg. o.t. Jews.

Life-force or Soul and Matter, which is energy in essence, with his left hand and the Atma or Spirit he provides with his right hand.

This does not exclude and may even mean that from a higher level; a higher dimension of the Universe certain highly evolved beings descended as incorporeal beings into the physicality of our third dimension; here on earth or even in another galaxy for experiencing this kind of life or whatever the reason may have been, and became trapped here in need of being saved. Adam used to live in Paradise. see below.

*

Man differs from the animal only by a little; most men throw that little away. Mencius

Man has a threefold layered brain, which clearly shows the evolution of our animal descent.

Human embryo's up till four months still have reptile tails as a remnant of evolution.

Or does it?

It must be said though that some "proofs" of man's evolution turned out to be hoaxes.

Right now only one person in 2 Billion will live to be 116.

Then the Word of God came to Adam, and said to him, "O Adam...when you came to live in this strange land, your animal body could not survive on earth without earthly food, to strengthen it and to restore its powers."  First book of Adam and Eve 15;1

It is sometimes said that the Hindi believe the soul is immortal, but this is a misconception. In Hinduism too a soul can die when in a place/state of Avichi.

So what again is the exact difference between man and animal? Animals are souls and have bodies. The name says it all; Anima is the Latin word for soul. Man too is a soul and has a body. But man also has a spirit, the Atma (Hindu) or Neshama (Hebrew) which provides him with a certain consciousness; a higher Self, that defines him from animals. This higher Self therefore is called Adam; it is what makes one a human being and Eve (Chava; Chaia or Life) is the soul that has obtained this higher Self. The two make one. They are like married to eachother. This human spirit is the amount of Spirit of God that resides in a human soul; some people have obtained a lot of it, others still have a long way to go.

The original Greek text uses the words "trochos tes geneseos", which means wheel of birth.

The Latin Vulgata also gives;

inflammat rotam nativitatis;  Jas 3:6 VULGATE

enflames (put in motion) the wheel of birth, or Samsara, the wheel of life, a well known Hindu term for reincarnation.)

How is this to be understood?

From Brahma's world down, the dwellers of all the worlds are subject to repeated birth and death. But, after attaining Me, one does not take birth again. Bhagavad-Gita 8.16

The same idea is found in the Talmud;

Nor in this world nor in the next, do the wise find rest; they go from strength to strength until they appear before God in Sion. Talmud; Berakot.64a.

With the soul of Adam the souls of all the generations of men were created. They are stored up in a promptuary, in the seventh of the heavens, whence they are drawn as they are needed for human body after human body. Tan. Pekude 3. also see; Ginzberg 1;soul of Adam.

Those who leave this life through death are arranged accordingly to the judging of their worthiness; some in the place called infernos, others in Abraham's lap and in different states and dwelling places. And in this manner, they leave these places when they die there, if that is the right phrase for it, and descend from the upper places to this hell. Because I believe the hell to which souls of the dead are lead from this world is called the lower hell due to this distinction.  Origenes; (contra Celsus;)   (Actually, he is talking about reincarnation.)

The Egyptians called that place beneath the earth, to which they believe that souls depart after the end of this life, they call Amenthes, the name signifying "the one who receives and gives."  De Iside et Osiride; Plutarch, Moralia.

Amenthes actually is derived from Amunet, the wife of Amun, the hidden one, one of the Ogdoad, the eight primeval gods of primeval water and air, who were before the Ennead; the nine later ones. Amun was invisible like the primeval air he represented. The deceased returned to their original invisible; airlike state in Amenti or Hades which actually means "invisible".

This connection between the invisible air and the vaporlike ghosts is why Enlil was a god, both of the air; the Atmosphere; the sphere of vapor, and of the ghosts.

Another word for Amenti, or Hades is Sheol. This too is an old Egyptian  term, namely "She'oul ah", which means "thirsty for life"

If you are in that state, you (still) want to go back to an earthly life.

The state of man is the judgment of God over the acts of the individuality.  Origines (contra Celsus;)

But Adam and Eve cried for having come out of the garden, their first Home. And indeed, when Adam looked at his flesh, that was altered, he cried bitterly, he and Eve, over what they had done...But now we do not see as we did; our eyes have become of flesh; they cannot see like they used to see before." Adam said again to Eve, "What is our body today, compared to what it was in former days, when we lived in the garden?" First Book of Adam and Eve

In every angel and also in every man there is an inmost or highest degree, or an inmost or highest something, into which the Divine of the Lord primarily or proximately flows, and from which it disposes the other interiors in him that follow in accordance with the degrees of order. This inmost or highest degree may be called the entrance of the Lord to the angel or man, and His veriest dwelling-place in them. It is by virtue of this inmost or highest that a man is a man, and is distinguished from irrational animals, for these do not have it. From this it is that man, unlike the animals, is capable, in respect to all his interiors which pertain to his mind and disposition, of being raised up by the Lord to Himself, of believing in the Lord, of being moved by love to the Lord, and thereby beholding Him, and of receiving intelligence and wisdom, and speaking from reason. Also, it is by virtue of this that he lives to eternity. Swedenborg Heaven and Hell sect. 2- 39

In rabbinic terms, the human soul is a small lamp that is being kindled by the holy torch; the vital spark of heavenly fire. Berakot 10a

Tat: Why then did God, O father, not on all bestow a share of Spirit? (sometimes erroneously; mind)
Hermes Trismegistos: He willed, my son, to have it set up in the midst for souls, just as it were a prize.
T: And where hath He set it up?
H: He filled a mighty Cup with it, and sent it down, joining a Herald [to it], to whom He gave command to make this proclamation to the hearts of men: Baptize thyself with this Cup's baptism, what heart can do so, thou that hast faith thou canst ascend to him that hath sent down the Cup, thou that dost know for what thou didst come into being! As many then as understood the Herald's tidings and doused themselves in Spirit, became partakers in the Gnosis; and when they had "received the Spirit" they were made "perfect men". Corpus Hermetica IV. The Cup or Monad

The first death dates from the time that Light fell into Darkness and mixed with the Archons of darkness until the time is ripe that the Light will be separated and sifted out of the darkness by the great fire. The Light purified from there will shape itself and take on the form of the last light image. Second death, on the other hand, is the death causing sinful people to die when the radiance that enlightens the world is taken from them. They are being cut off from the living Spirit by which the breath is being received and will be completely separated from the living Soul…The first death is a temporarily one; the second death opposed to that is one without ending. Swedenborg was talking about the individual personalities; the "spirits" of deceased people and didn't believe in reincarnation. In a sense he was right of course. The personality that you are right now is not an reincarnation. It is a new personality. In a past life you were a different personality. You may have been a woman or a buddhist monk or whatever. He also said that each person in life is accompanied by spirits from hell as well as by spirits from heaven assigned to influence you. But if these spirits are the individualities of your past lives who have found their place in either heaven or hell, it is no wonder that they were assigned to you and it adds up to exactly what is meant by reincarnation, namely that you, your personality is subconsciously influenced by the personalities of your past lives.
