The name
Azael can be traced back to the Babylonian god NinAzu, known from the
Myth of Anzu.
In this tale, NinAzu, Lord Azu, was an other name for the god Ninurta who returned the Me's to Enlil. The Me's were the tables of destiny, on which were engraved the destinies of the Universe, the Earth, and everything on it.
Ninurta was the Sumero-Babylonian god of rain, fertility, war, thunderstorms, wells, canals, floods, the plough and the South Wind. His name means "lord of the earth" and mankind owed to him the fertile fields and the healthy live-stock. His wife is Gula, the Sumerian goddess of healing, whose symbolic animal was the dog. Gula is often associated with the underworld.
Ninurta (Ninazu) was created in order to restore the power of Enlil. whose Me's were stolen by Anzu.
By means of an event, that caused the Earth to be flooded, this power; the Kingship really, was been taken away from Anzu, the mythical flying creature that lived here on Earth before Mankind did and may be the same as Samael who also flies like a bird.
The possession of these tablets apparently either gave the owner knowledge of, and power over the future, or it meant that someone or some nation had become so powerful that the gods were placed off-side.
